A bulletin board is a place for posting things (duh), traditionally on a cork or write-erase board in an office or dorm or anywhere else. Way back in the 70s, 80s, and 90s they were reinvented for use on computers and called BBSs. There were many types of BBSs - Telegard/Renegade, Citadel, WME, WildCat!, etc.
