BBS stands for Bulletin Board System. The person in charge of, owner, whatever, was called a SysOp (System Operator). Some BBSs would have Aides which were trusted helpers of the SysOp and often had the same privileges.

These days BBSs have been more or less replaced by Forums, although they don't have nearly the same look or feel.
