Think of authd as being an access control list for your SMTP server. You define rules which can permit or deny SMTP mail being being accepted or denied by your SMTP server for both inbound and outbound mail. It has features which allow it to be used as a popauth daemon as well, and supports pcre (perl compatible regular expressions) in rules.
